Commercially available e-Readers are not suitable for submarines of the U.S. Navy because of security and technological issues. But submarine sailors like to read and space is not available for physical books. So the solution is the NavyE-Reader Device (NERD.)
Each submarine has 5 NERDs, produced at a cost of $3k each and they have adjustable typefaces and sizes and a carrying case. Each of the units can hold about 300 books but they have no Internet connection, downloading, no camera and no removable storage. They are loaded with books and are constantly reviewed and updated. Each unit has a time limit for use and their is a waiting list constantly. It has proven such a success that it is now being installed on minesweepers, destroyers, frigates, cruisers, and hospital ships. Some ooo Robinson Crusoe Various works by Shakespeare, Jane Austen, James, Joyce,Whitman, and Coleridge.f the titles include: Lord of the Rings The Bible The Koran Most of the 18 titles the CNO puts on the Professional Reading programme 1776 by David McCullough A Game of Thrones To Kill a Mockingbird The Girl With the Dragon tattoo Robinson Crusoe Works by Shakespeare, Walt Whitman, Jane Austen, James Joyce and Samuel Coleridge

Understand the security concerns, however, it sounds line the crew is limited to selections by "The Man" as to his reading choices. What about some down-and-dirty westerns or just no-think thrillers? And just 5 per boat??

I agree. When I went on patrol I would take about a dozen paperback books with me that I that I brought in my seabag. Yeah, it took up a little room, but who needs a bunch of skivvies and socks anyway? I would supplement what I brought with books from our small ship's library. This new procedure stinks as far as I am concerned. I don't read books from a screen. There is nothing like the real thing.
