There were many rumors and stories about the Admiral. Some true, some questionable.
At a lunch, a prospective nuclear officer salted his food before he tasted it. Word was he was rejected due to making irrational decisions. A candidate for Instructor at Nuc Power school was not an engineer. The Admiral asked him why he should even consider him. The Officer said he was very knowledgeable and innovative. The Admiral told him to return within two hours with a live seagull. With the aid of a small fish hook, a french fry and a line he returned with time to spare with the seagull. He got accepted. Then there was the famous chair with one short leg and the book of matches on the desk.

I heard one while I was still in the navy...It goes; a young officer was waiting for hours to see Rickover for his interview, and when he was called in to see him, Rickover famously asked him to piss him off. The young officer thought for a moment, he then reached down and swiped everything off Rickover desk and walked out. Rickover was pissed, but accepted the interviewee into his program.. Don't know how true it was but it sure made me believe that Rickover worked in mysterious ways... |

He wasn't very ingenious when he had the Weapons Officer take my watch on thew 600B. He came around to the security area, took one look at me, and went straight to the Wardroom wanting me out of submarines. I was taking the watch so my troops could get some rest after an almost 50 hour non-stop evolution. I was filthy and stunk. When he found out what I was doing I ended up with a meritorious Captain's Mast. But he did let the Weps take my watch while I sh*t, showered, shaved, and put on a clean set of duds.

Folks largely do not know of all that the KOG did that affected people in Submarines. And on the other hand, folks frequently blame him for things that he had no involvement in. A great man!

Gotta ask, does KOG stand for Kin of God? The quote I heard more than once was "Rickover isn't God, but I believe he would be qualified to stand the watch." That attributed to a senior ORSE rider.
