The correct 1st edition of this 1984 book by Tom Clancy will cost you $1000 to $2500 depending on condition and insuring it is the true 1st. Of course the dust jacket must be in pristine condition.

Because there is no price on first edition Hunt for Red October dust jacket, it can be confused for a http://www.fedpo.com/FAQ.php/Book-Club-Editions" rel="nofollow - book club edition if that alone is the criteria being considered. But fortunately there are several other ways to tell the first edition from the http://www.fedpo.com/FAQ.php/Book-Club-Editions" rel="nofollow - book club edition we have observed. The true first edition is 9.25 inches tall, while the http://www.fedpo.com/FAQ.php/Book-Club-Editions" rel="nofollow - book club edition is an inch shorter. The first edition has 18 lines of text on the copyright page, while the http://www.fedpo.com/FAQ.php/Book-Club-Editions" rel="nofollow - book club edition has only 12 lines of text. The missing 6 lines are Library of Congress statements. The first edition is fully bound in red cloth, while the http://www.fedpo.com/FAQ.php/Book-Club-Editions" rel="nofollow - book club edition has cheaper two-tone paper boards.

More detail on the true first edition:

It has the following first printing points: 18 lines on copyright page; ISBN number on the book back binding panel & on the dustjacket back panel; six blurbs on back dj with Clive Clusser's blurb in third place; no price on dustjacket; and no printing indicators on the copyright page). Condition: VG/VG. Red clothboards with silver printing; corners show touch of wear; blindstamped with Soviet hammer, sickle and submarine. T

You mean I should have kept that early edition I bought instead of putting it in the boats library after I got done with it. I think about a fourth of the crew read it. Then it was left for the Gold Crew.

This was a joke post on my part. However, I wonder just how many valuable books like this are out there and no one even guesses their value. I continued to give books to the Boats library even after I left for Shore Duty at SIMA Charleston. Now I give them to Goodwill.

       Well sh*t, Sewer Pipe.

I read that edition while flying from New York to Rome to meet the Tullibee in the Med in '86. Kind of scared me when he mentioned the Tullibee in there as a hunk'o'junk.
Mine went to the small library also.

Oh well,

I assume that the 19th line of numbers (85 86 87 88 15 14 13 12 11) dosen't count as "text"?
Unfortunately, my dust cover is long gone after being passed around to many friends but the book is still in good condition.
