Wikipedia has the following:
In 3 November 1974 Nathanael Greene during departure from Holy Loch was collided with soviet K-306 submarine of  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victor-class_submarine" rel="nofollow - Victor-I  class. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Nathanael_Greene_%28SSBN-636%29#cite_note-1" rel="nofollow - [1]  CIA sources claimed that it was James Madison, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Nathanael_Greene_%28SSBN-636%29#cite_note-2" rel="nofollow - [2]  not Greene.
So what is the real story?

From what I can remember I can neither confirm nor deny, Around that time one of the boats did collide with the Soviet boat. It was rumored the buoys had been released, We may or may not have been told to never mention it. When we returned to Holy Loch, in the mail, was a newspaper article my Mom had sent that said the Madison had hit a russian sub and an erroneous alert message sent due to the impact activating a device. So who knows about the truth?
