RE: Submarine Naming

Dear Representative Liz Cheney,

It has come to the attention of the submarine veterans in Wyoming that the naming of the new class
of missile submarines (Columbia) will be the USS Columbia.  That is acceptable to all.  However we would like to see future subs in this class to be named for Submarine Medal of Honor winners after the State names are used.

We are aware that two of our MOH awardees are named currently for DDGs but that leaves 6 to pick from and maybe in 10-12 years those names will become available.  If not there are several WWII commanding officers who have won 4 Navy Crosses and one with 5.  

Submarines historically were named for fish. That changed with the naming of the USS George Washington which was the first missile submarine. Since then, subs have been named for cities, people of historical backgrounds, political entities, and most recently for states.

We believe the crew of the new submarines would have a greater sense of honor and belonging if the boats were named for these heroes and not for politicians, as we notice that the current trend of surface vessels being named for Carl Levin, Danial Inouye, Lyndon Johnson, et al.  

Thank you for taking the time out to read this. I am hopeful this important issue receives due attention. It would be a great success if steps are taken through your efforts to honor these men and provide an example of heroism for those now serving to strive for.
