'arguments for both' should read 'arguments for both acceptance of SORG totals and JANAC totals'.

Of course I am not the arbitrator of War Patrol "success," but the award of Medals followed a rigid/codified performance scale that was not official according to Admiral Lockwood.

We might compare it to the standards to receive the Medal of Honor.  Originally, one had to little more than be wounded.  Later, various requirements for bravery and or heroism were included.  I have never read of any effort to go back and retroactively strip awards for those 1860s recipients.

I have read virtually every book I have been able to find on Submarine Operations in the Pacific during WWII and I must say that I have never read of nor heard of any thoughts about stripping anyone of awards or medals.  That said, had the US lost the war there can be little doubt that we had waged Unrestricted Warfare in the air, on and under the sea.

Actually 911 medals were rescinded. 864 were awarded to members of the 27th ME to get them to stay 4 days beyond their enlistments during the Gettysburg campaign. 29 were members of the Lincoln honor guard after his assassination. 6 were civilians, including mary Walker, a contract surgeon during the Civil War and the rest appear to be simply awarded in error.
