As of Monday evening (8 days from Convention start) we have a total of 3.25% of USSVI members (400 of 12300) attending! I can remember conventions with 1000 and 400 attending the ABM alone.
Why so low?  Most Base meetings get 10-15% attendance.
Costs of venues, hotel, transportation, lack of vendors, too many meetings, lack of quality speakers at the major meetings, location (it's 100 deg at 7pm in Austin Aug 5th) (and should we really be having conventions during hurricane season in Florida?), time of year, and other reasons.
Can you imagine the thousands of hours of work this takes.  We would better spend time trying to find reasons for our declining membership and finding worthy projects. Our membership has declined since 2001!
USSVI voted to having Conventions every two years.  Then a guy stood up and said that was fine, but the amendment did NOT say we couldn't have one every year!  So his proposal was voice voted in at the ABM on Saturday morning and here we are.  We are going back to Orlando in 2021 because of an arrangement made with the hotel in which they cut our (low attendance quota penalty) in half if we would come back in 2001.  So then my question becomes what if a major hurricane come and wipes out the Convention a day or two before or during?
Do the same people come to all the Conventions?  Quite a few I am thinking.  Probably about 1/2 in my opinion come regardless of cost/location.
One gent I spoke to opted for Regional Conferences and have 2-3 EBoard members at each in August and September.  The EBoard is getting good at having conference calls and we could also have the mid-term via conference call also saving big bucks.  The West has one every year but they need to move it around a little rather than always in the Souther Nevada.  They get 90-100 at each one.
What are your thoughts folks?

I believe that a major cause is that we are all aging, and hotel and travel costs are increasing. I don't have a solution, but do find the idea of regional conventions interesting. If nothing else, it would be easier to travel to them.

I agree with Ol Ed on the travel, aging and costs. I'd rather go to my boats reunions which are held every two years. That being said I don't make every reunion. The only National convention I made was on the Alaska cruise, and I attended because I was already there. The meeting was boring as hell, when the guy sitting next to me tried to make a point about something he was told in so many words he wasn't gonna be heard. Pissed him off to no end and he walked out. Can't blame him either. The board never listens to the membership, to Ron's point about a vote for it being held every two years, then some ringer stands up and cries and guess what...So much for listening to the members. Lets face it, the board wants a free ride to someplace every year.
So I would not pay a nickel to attend a national convention. A regional convention sounds interesting, as long as it's not filled with wannabe politicians, which it what the national convention is all about.

Here is another plan to make it easier:
Create 2 regions in the West!
CA, HI, NM, NV, AZ  - 4 Districts- 23 Bases-1712 Members
WA, OR, ID, WY, CO, UT, MT - 4 Districts - 19 Bases  1703 Members
Two Regional Conventions/Conferences/Round-ups with the 2 RD's and NC attending + One other EBoard person (NSVC, NJVC, NTreas, NSec, DCOY, one other closest RD.
__________
The same thinking for Central Region, but it is a little tougher:
WCentral--ND, SD, NE, KS, OK, TX, MN, IA, MO, AR  29 Bases 1329 members
ECentral--WI, MI, IL, IN, OH, WV, KY, TN  26 Bases 1810 members
The East is already Split so that is a no-brainer
Two Regional Conventions/Conferences/Round-ups with the 2 RD's and NC attending + One other EBoard person (NSVC, NJVC, NTreas, NSec, DCOY, one other closest RD.

A regional convention is something I would try, especially since it would probably be within driving distance away. While I'm still able to drive, I'd definitely give it a shot. Our base is signing up some younger members. They initially join for the SS license plates, but hopefully they become meeting going members. As us old guys die out we may have some younger turks to take over and continue our SS legacy. That my hope anyway.

I heard today that the Attendance is now 418 or 3.39% of USSVI membership with one week to go.
