I recently found my original dog tags circa 1975. On the third line is my religious preference followed by the word OTHER. Does anyone, probably a Personnelman, know what that means?  Thanks for your help!

I wasn't a Personnelman, but from what I recall from boot camp when we ordered our dog tags, the choices were "Catholic", "Protestant", "Other", or "__(fill in)___".  Seeing how I was a heathen young pirate, sworn to fun and loyal to none, I wrote in "None", so that's what was embossed on my tags.  Hard to define "I am spiritual, but have no formal religion" in one word, so I didn't even try.  Hope that helps.

Just a guess. But back in the day I think there were only the major religions listed...Catholic, Protestant and Jewish. The other may have been for atheist, Buddhist, etc. If you didn't fit the mold your dogtags may have said "other". Though I will admit that I never saw that designation.
Maybe one of the guys who got out later then I did may know about it...

I'm guessing that as a young man, alone in boot camp, away from everyone you'd ever known, forced to choose from the nearly 3,000 deities in recorded human history, you paused, looked skyward and thought "OTHER".

Mine say Lutheran. Still have a D series Number, no SS number. If you put none on in Boot you wound up in those religious re-education classes on Sunday. Lasted twice as long as Church and the fire breathing Baptist really tore into folks that were there instead of church.

I dug out my dog tags from boot camp (San Diego, 1960) and found that it has the word "Meth" stamped on the bottom.  I'm pretty sure that means Methodist, not illicit drug of choice.  I haven't looked at it many years and had forgotten making that particular choice. But it is a good thing I did because instead of marching over to the protestant services every Sunday morning during boot camp I would have been left behind to help the atheists field day the barracks. Wink

Mine said "UNITY" which is a church I didn't even know about.  Also, my dog tags and medical record had different blood types listed.

On the ship we had one guy whose dog tags read "no spec." I asked him what it meant, and he said it meant no specific religion.

I never went to church in boot camp, and didn't have to field day the barracks with the non-religion types. Don't know why though.
