Cold War Submariner Donald Milion Ulmer, Age 90, of Kirkland WA departed 11/3/2019 on his final and Eternal Patrol

Don Joined the Navy in 1947 as a white hat and retired in 1979 as CAPTAIN. He qualified in submarines aboard USS Clamagore in 1949 as ET3(SS), graduated from the NAVAL ACADAMY in 1954, and ultimately returned to command Clamagore in 1967. He also served aboard EX-U2513, HALFBEAK, BARRACUDA, PATRICK HENRY & CORPORAL.

After qualifying aboard CLAMAGORE, Six months later, he was advised he'd be transferred to the Naval Academy Prep School. When Ulmer asked his captain "why me?" the skipper replied facetiously, "I don't think you're smart enough to make second class and I need the bunk space!"

When Don Ulmer returned to CLAMAGORE in 1967 as Commanding Officer. He then became one of the few, if not only, to have served in an enlisted status and as commanding officer in the same warship.

Don was an accomplished author, having written nine submarine based novels, including SILENT BATTLEGROUND, SHADOWS OF HEROS, SKAGERRAK, ENSURE PLAUSIBLE DENIABILITY and THE COLD WAR BENEATH. (Avail on AMAZON).

Don was a life and Holland club member of USSVI Seattle Base.
