When I was stationed on USS Georgia, the CO would order this song played on the UQC after we "sunk" our opponent in warfare games.

We were up in the Arctic Basin on Pargo in 1968 proceeding to a scheduled rendezvous with Skate.    We picked up Skate at a  great distance while we each closed.  Capt White had us close to a position off his quarter without his detecting us

Next, the CO had our Communicator, Herb Swanson, who spoke Russian, hail the Skate on the UQC.

We heard much later that it scared the Devil out of them.

I note that in the seventies, most boats had at least one Russian speaker aboard. Ours was the NAV.

Thanks, did not know that.  Only knew of one boat with one Russian speaker.  When I attended The Naval Academy in early 60's the choices were Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Russian.  I knew nobody that studied Russian.  lol

We carried a Russian speaking sailor on the 600. He was a designated YN and also the boats diver. This was for only one patrol. We got close to Ivan one time and sonar picked up their movie. After staying awhile the CO ordered a few turns. Unfortunately, the OOD grabbed the UQC by mistake and ordered the turns. Those Russians went ape s&^t.

Tom,

I've heard of OOD's mistakenly grabbing the UQC mike.  Our UQC transmitter was disabled when there might be a concern.

For those that remember the BQC from Quals, the BQCs were typically simply turned Off.

Walt, in the 60's I don't remember anyone speaking Russian on any of the boats I rode.   However, I mostly hung out aft of frame 94 (96?) so how the hell would I know?  Now, on the Edison and Wilson we had pretty large contingent of sailors who were quite fluent in Scottish.  And on the Queenfish, out of San Diego in 1961, we had a bunch of Spanish speakers.  Tijuana commandos and all like that, don'tcha know. Wink

I graduated BESS in 1971, we were all taught Russian, Origami and Ninja warfare techniques.

On the boats I was on the mike was disconnected from the UQC (and in sonar), unless needed for an exercise.
