Serving on a deployed FBM I learned early on the art of making friends on the Tender. Eight Taco Bell Beef Burritos for Shop 56 leading first. A large can of a certain brand of Chilis for the Chief's mess. 12 Big Mac's for the ships Sup and friends. A six pack of Coors for the repair Officer. The Coors was split up among the crew so it could ride in the passenger compartment on the plane. The Engineering Officers and the CO knew about it, and paid the tab. The Coors came from a Trucker I hunted with out of Walterboro. Back then it wasn't sold East of the Rockies. Funny when the Tenders shifted in Holy Loch the presents were still well received. Ah, the art of Comshaw.

PSNSY - Coffee, Coffee and more Coffee could accomplish just about anything especially chrome plating. Mixed nuts and potato chips were good in Sub Base - Pearl.

Summer 1966 we were in a private yacht yard (wooden hulled Minesweep) and I requested messcooking - anything to get out of chipping paint. I never went anywhere without an apron full of apples, oranges, bananas, an occasional canned ham and plenty of coffee. A case of frozen steaks on a Friday lunch did wonders for the yacht yard personnel morale. (I tipped off the welding shop foreman to make up a barbecue and lay in a supply of charcoal.) That's where I learned how to stick, MIG and TIG weld.

I don't know how it was done, and my hat is dipped to the King of Comshaw whoever he was. Our Departing Captain was gifted a Naval Aviators jacket with a Wolverine Collar in Holy Loch on the completion of his last run with us. Now that was a major accomplishment.

I was supply PO for two patrols early on. I submitted multiple creative supply chits for an aviator leather jacket without success. So much for Polaris getting whatever they requested although for all I know they were intercepted on the tender. I was able to get an OD Green USN blanket that I used as a beach blanket for many years after I got out. Sailors are definitely devious and not to be trusted.
