May 22, 1968 she was lost 400 nautical miles SW of the Azore Islands with loss of 99 crewmen.  Two crewmen were left at Rota prior to her moving into the Atlantic.  The Research ship Mizar found her in 9900' of water in October 1969. 55 ships and 32 planes searched the area. You can see some pictures of later explorations by typing in USS Scorpion SSN-589. The exact date is uncertain May 22-27?
