I have an original Chelsea ships clock. You know, like the ones we had on the boats. I had always thought they ran for nine days. My Clock guy told me the worst thing I could do was turn a clock backwards to set it. So I just figured to allow all my mechanical wind up clocks to run down to reset for Fall Behind Daylight Savings time stopping. Now my pendulum clocks I just stop the pendulum. So all my clocks have wound down and been reset. All except the Chelsea ships clock. It is now at thirteen days and showing no signs of slowing down. How often did they get wound on the boats, every week or every two weeks?

On my ship, in radio - yes, I'm another DAMN Radioman, we had two Chelsea ships clocks. One set to GMT and the other set to the local time. The GMT clock had a bright yellow "Z" painted on the face of the glass, and both had two red painted "pie" shaped sections, between the 15 and 20 minute mark, and again at the 45 to 50 minute mark. These were "radio silence" periods, when we monitored both 500 KHz and 2182 KHz, international lifeboat frequencies. They were both wound at roughly 2330 GMT. They were also set - to the second - by using a time tick broadcast by WWV or WWVH - National Bureau of Standards.
Turning an old bedside wind-up alarm clock backward would mess up the alarm mechanism. Most clocks can be turned backwards, BUT when in doubt, you can turn them AHEAD 23 hours.

Thanks John, I was going on the advice of the guy that had rebuilt this clock. I appreciate the input.

In case anyone is interested, it ran for almost sixteen days.
