How is the NAVY going to be certain deploying submarines don't have any Coronavirus carriers in the crew? This is a unique situation to deal with in our unique times. The enclosed atmosphere will add a great deal to potential transmittal.
Walt,
Had I done everything right throughout my life, the World wouldn't have noticed.

Had a bad flu run through the crew one patrol I did on the 730. At the worst point, we had nearly half the crew off the watchbill and confined to their racks. When it ran, it went like wildfire. Pretty sure boats dont have even a single invasive ventilator onboard (but they might now).

Same situation once where after a couple weeks out an epidemic of strep throat broke out. Half the crew bedridden within a few days. Took almost 2 weeks for it to subside. I would suggest the submarine force obtain some of those new 5 minute test kits. Check all before deployment. Even the 15 minute ones are good alternate.

Tom,
If they all test negative just before getting underway, does that mean none has the virus and would be at risk during the trip?

Not really since there are errors due to the virus not being fully detectable. They've discovered this recently here in Florida. People are being tested negative in part due to inadequate training of the sample takers.

So testing immediately before the boat gets underway will not insure crew will not come down with corona virus.

Right. This virus may not show symptoms up to 14 days after exposure. That's why they ask for a 14 day self quarantine. I'm no professional but believe there's no guarantees. Their still learning about the habits of this virus. And God forbid it mutates again.
