Can't stay away from politics can you? Not allowed here I am told, and I follow the rules of the board.
(the numbers are Hillary Clinton's vote count for those wondering)

Uncle Charlie (Charles A. Lockwood) Quoted a specific number of US Subs Lost he attributed to the asshole from West Virginia.  Some dismissed his arithmetic but if anyone was qualified to determine the effect of the security breach. he the man with the data (sinking rates, locations, reports of losses).

He wanted them to hang he culprit.

Others claimed it would further emphasize and confirm the facts to the enemy.

War profiteering allegations

Sometime shortly before or during the U.S. entry into World War II, May became involved with Murray Garsson and Henry Garsson, New York businessmen with no prior arms manufacturing experience who sought lucrative munitions contracts then being awarded by the U.S. Government. May was known to frequently telephone army ordnance and other government officials on the Garssons' behalf to award war contracts, obtain draft deferments, and secure other favors for the Garssons and their friends. So numerous were these interventions that one ordnance official referred to them as "blitz calls."[6] After the war, a Senate investigating committee reviewing the Garsson's munitions business discovered evidence that May had received substantial cash payments and other inducements from the Garssons.[7]

Conviction and postwar life

Following news reports of irregularities concerning his conduct in office, May was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1946 to the Eightieth Congress. The bribery scandal was intensified by testimony of excessive profit-taking in the Garsson munition business, and that the Garsson factory produced 4.2-inch mortar shells with defective fuzes, resulting in premature detonation and the deaths of 38 American soldiers.[8] After less than two hours of deliberation,[9] May was convicted by a federal jury on July 3, 1947, on charges of accepting bribes to use his position as Chairman of the Military Affairs Committee to secure munitions contracts during the Second World War. Murray and Henry Garsson also received prison terms.[10] After protracted efforts to avoid incarceration,[9] May subsequently served nine months in federal prison.

However, he continued to retain influence in Democratic party politics, and President Truman decided to grant May a full pardon in 1952.[1] Unable to revive his political career, he returned home to practice law until his death.[1]

May died in Prestonsburg, Kentucky on September 6, 1959, and is buried in Mayo Cemetery.[1]

The lodge at Jenny Wiley State Resort Park in Prestonsburg, Kentucky, was named after May by Governor Bert T. Combs.

Admiral Nimitz credited the asshole with up to 10 boats lost.  If you want to know where his grave is (for pissing purposes, let me know).

Just as an exercise cause the Packer/Falcon game sucks and I'm waiting for the Steelers game I ran some numbers

Only taking sinkings possibly due to depth charging.
Before publication 6 possible sinkings in 2.5 years (all aprox) gives 2.4 sinkings per year.
After publication 12 possible sinkings in 3.5 years yields 3.4 sinkings per year.

Now to normalize the statistic one must divide the sinkings per year by the number of submarine patrols (average) per year (look in the back of Blair's "Silent Victory").  The number of submarine patrol/year in the first 2.5 years would need to be 1.4 times the number of submarine patrols/year in the second 3.5 years to make the sink rate even.  I know for sure that this is not the case.  Thus there was no 'surge'.

Admiral Lockwood was rightly incensed but was a bit off in the numbers.  I cannot fault him at all for the statement.  It may well have served to prevent further breaches of security.

As I said before, post-war examination finds no evidence that there was a resetting of the depth charge detonation points by the Japanese navy throughout the war.  I cannot quote you a source for this, but if you dig, you can find it.

Good question!!!  It is often useful to revisit what we think is right and to discover by doing so what is really right.

Gooooooo Steeeeeelers!

Be Well

All of my studies indicate the same thing "Oldsubs" said.  It was never proved.  Not saying it was right of the stupid congressman to say that but whatever..
Every increase in government authority is a decrease of the liberty of each citizen.
