29 years ago last Monday, we lost 3 shipmates and the USS Bonefish. I was underway for ORSE on Simon Bolivar when we got the report - XO had it looped continuously on the ship's entertainment system.

Edit: 29 years, not 19... very embarrassing, sorry!

Ashamed to say I didn't even remember the incident. It did occur after I left the service, but that isn't an excuse.
Walt,
Had I done everything right throughout my life, the World wouldn't have noticed.

I was overhaul engineer in BONEFISH ('76-'78).  Soon after reporting I asked the Fuel King how they take on fuel.  "Well, you open this valve and that valve and close the other valve over there......."  and so it went.  The hardest part of the job was writing something called procedures.  Came back as XO a few years later and things were a little better.......except for the 7 1/2 month WESTPAC  (we burned up a main motor enroute Hong Kong to Subic and spent a month and a half in Subic getting it fixed).
As far as the BONEFISH fire, anybody allowing operation with a 50k DC ground needs their head examined.
