Great story Dave, thanks for sharing that with us...A tradition that was started with a catastrophe.

How many have their name and qual date engraved on the back of their origional Dolphins? How many have real silver Dolphins? Just a part of tradition that I have rearly seen, but often enough to notice.
Walt,
Had I done everything right throughout my life, the World wouldn't have noticed.

Just looked. My original Dolphins from 1960 have a concave back. Would be neat to engrave them but can't see how it would be possible.

Laser etching would work, or maybe a jeweler that engraves rings and other odd items.

My qual Dolphins pinned on me by Capt Frame were "inexpensive" (concave backs) and I still wear them with pride  on my USS Requin SS 481 ball cap.
But it was also a point of pride to go buy a set of Sterling silver "solid backs" as we called them as soon as possible to wear on your liberty uniform, saving the qual Dolphins for your inspection uniform.
The Solid Backs are on my USS Carp SS338 hat. One pair or the other will go with me into the ground, I dont care which.
