It seems like she would have sunk right there if the crew was dead from their own blast?

I got the impression from the article that the explosion did not breach the Hunley's hull.  If so, she may have drifted below the surface for a while before settling on the bottom.

Maybe.  So I took another look at the article.  And it looks like the explosion was the cause of their deaths, but the boat maintained watertight integrity for a time.

Quote . . . the skeletons of all eight of the crew were all still at their stations, with no broken bones, and the sub was in very good condition . . .

"There were some holes in the hull that were the result of time under the sea. But there was no actual damage found to have happened from the blast itself," . . .
