The first few SSN-637s had ladder rungs welded on the port side of the sail. Actually could climb down to the deck from the top of the sail. They "whistled" due to submerged flow noise at speed so we're no longer installed and removed from those early boats of the class. |

They definitely aren't AN/BST-1 buoy launch tubes. So the first question should be what are/were they used for.

Possibly a sonar trace whistle. I know we spent a lot of time near Andros while they figured out if the Lithbro steam valve was a distinct signature. I also heard they were concerned with holes in the hull whistling from water flow through them. Naturally they never told us anything, but we did replace the Lithbro steam bypass valve. Over forty years ago, so I doubt I am giving anything away.

I wonder why EB stopped placing '4 holes' in each side of the superstructure, near the aft end of the sail??
Anybody know why the last 4 or 5 ships don't have them?
