The Chaplin at the Willamette National Cemetery monthly memorial told us that everyone dies twice.  Once when we leave this earth.  And, second when no one remembers us.  Our job as the ones left is to make sure these people are always remembered so that they never die entirely.

Dan, Your son is certainly remembered, not just by us in the submarine community. But by name, in the linked Wiki entry above, Machinist's Mate Second Class Joseph Allen Ashley, 24, of Akron, Ohio, is enshrined in the collective memory of the connected world.

I read a saying some time ago. I hope I quote it correctly. It says:  If they are remembered then truly they are not gone, but merely on another patrol. I have used that quote often.
