On this date in 2005 at 02:43 GMT, USS San Francisco collided with an undersea mountain about 364 nautical miles (675 km) southeast of Guam while operating at flank (maximum) speed at a depth of 525 feet (160 m). Official US Navy reporting subsequent to the grounding cited the location as "in the vicinity of the Caroline Islands". The position of the impact was estimated by a newspaper account as 7°45'06.0"N 147°12'36.0"E, between Pikelot and Lamotrek Atolls. We remember. We remember MM2/SS Joseph Ashley, a 24 year old sailor from Akron, OH who was killed in this tragic accident. Some of the members of this BBS were aboard San Francisco at the time, and of course, we salute Dan Ashley, Joey's father, who is also a member here. Dan, you haven't been aboard this BBS is a while, but if you swing by... we remember.

We don't care what you did. You were a VET is the key. Going back in time we have entertained an AO sailor (Oiler), Luke the Lid who was Air Force, and a great Army guy who had many stories and was the brother/cousin of Sid Harrison who was submariner. I will never forget the story he told that occurred at the end of WWII. They couldn't ship all the Army back at once so they were taken to Guam. Then at Thanksgiving they were promised a Turkey and all the trimmings. The Birds came out and were perfectly formed. The only problem were they were solid Spam! I am thrilled to have you around Dan. Don't be a stranger.
