Wishing all my shipmates a blessed and generous Thanksgiving, whether served amongst family and friends at home, or with brothers and sisters above and below the waves protecting our shores and National security interests beyond our horizon. Take a moment to salute and praise those who paid the ultimate sacrifice so we may live in freedom and peace at home. We have much to be thankful for; this year’s celebrations should mirror and be no less. |

Many happy returns shipmate. Happy Thanksgiving. I had my first Thanksgiving at sea on 599B 1963. Didn't we have Turkey loaf on that run?

I was there with you Tom on that patrol, but your memory is better than mine. BUT 10 turkeys would take up a lot of freezer space and oven space!

2-3 Years later I was Pre-Comm on Pargo at EB. I was the Supply Officer/Food Services Officer until the Supply Corps Officer showed up.
In any event, we were at sea on Sea Trials soon after the PorkChop showed up. He relieved me as Supply Officer and I became Sonar and EMO... however he relieved me with a many page Relieving Letter detailing many, many details. A most serious one was that I had a lot of food on board and ashore that was "off the books." The PCO, Cdr Steve White, later Admiral White, had told me to scrounge enough Canned Hams and Frozen Thanksgiving Turkeys so that every man in the crew would get his choice to take home for the Holidays. I went to the XO and asked if my Navy Career was essentially over. XO asked me if I was I really upset, and I said, "Yes!" He ripped up the letter and sent me on my way. At some point down the road, they got rid of that PorkChop! Edited by SaltiDawg - 26 Nov 2022 at 3:42pm |
