With the thin ice problems last year, some ice fishing friends are taking additional precautions this year. They are installing runners under their smaller pontoon boats. Removing the large engine and putting a trolling engine inside the cabin. Installing a trap door amid ships with portable drop down walls to seal the opening against the wind. Then they use a canvas cabin enclosure and a heat stove. If the ice gives, they are OK. Plus it tows easily with a four wheeler or big snowmobile. They stake the four corners to ice holes for wind movement protection. Some even temporarily insulate the floor and roof.
