To keep or not to keep?  That is the question.

Is Java still necessary?  Is it OK to uninstall or disable Java?  Or should I keep it?

Using Windows 7, BTW.

Java is still used for quite a lot of things, I advise keeping it, and keeping it up-to-date.
Download latest version for your OS here:

Thanks, for your input, Gerry.  I will take your advice and download and install the latest version of Java.  Thumbs Up

Stan

Well, I when went to Java this warning was displayed at the top:  IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING THE SECURITY OF JAVA SE

So I clicked on it, went to the page, read it, and deleted my old Java as it recommended.

Then I clicked on Free Java Download and this warning was displayed:

We have detected you are using the 64-bit version of Firefox which will not run the Java plugin from this browser.

I had already deleted my old Java and am now Java-free, apparently.  So, should I go ahead and download the new Java and install it anyway or just forget about it?

Java isn't used so much in websites anymore, and if you do stumble onto a site that needs it, you could open that site in Chrome if the site is important to you. Many other programs on your computer, though, my require Java, so I still recommend installing the current version. Eventually, FF 64bit will support Java again.

*While Java is slowly disappearing from the web, "javascript" has become ubiquitous. Please note that Java and javascript are not the same thing, in fact not related in any way other than a poor choice in naming. Javascript does indeed run the web, but you already have it built into your browser.

I didn't know that.  I thought it was primarily for synching up with websites.  Anyway, I will go back and download and install it.  After all what can it hurt?  Besides, I might need it someday and, best of all, it's free.  Thumbs Up

Thanks again.
