These Cleveland Diesel (Which became General Motors) engine type 8-268 made war patrols during WWII. On the diesel boats they were the 'charging engines' or 'dinky diesels'. They were placed in storage when the diesel boats were converted to Guppy or Fleet Snorkel. As the first nuclear submarines were being built they went into the early boats as their emergency diesel generators.

Engine 14776 came from the USS Sterlet (SS-392) and was put into USS Seawolf (SSN575)

Engine 14784 came from the USS Blenny (SS-324) and was put into USS Skate (SSN-578)

Engine 15152 came from the USS Carbonero (SS-337) and went into USS Swordfish (SSN-579)

Engine 14783 came from the USS Caiman (SS-323) and went into USS Sargo (SSN-583)

Engine 14782 came from the USS Blackfin (SS-322) and went into USS Seadragon (SSN-584)

Engine 14778 came from the USS Becuna (SS-319) and went into USS Halibut (SSGN-587)

The Nautilus may have two diesels. The listing of GM diesel production lists number 15167 is supposedly on board (as new) and the other if she had two is number 12584 and was originally to go into USS Rogers (DE-772) whose construction was cancelled in 1944.

These were the last General Motors diesels aboard US nuclear submarines as the rest have all been and still are Fairbanks-Morse.
