Department of Defense Extends Online Military Exchange Shopping Privileges to Veterans

The Army, Air Force and Navy exchange will start allowing all honorably discharged veterans to shop online, (think Amazon, but only cheaper with no taxes.)  The target start date is Veterans Day, November 11, 2017 but, you must register first.  Registration begins June 1, 2017.  You must call 1-844-868-8672  after June 1 to register.

For those of you that want to register online, you can get your verification through a website called VetVerify.org. (https://www.vetverify.org/index.xhtml).

To register, you will need to provide your name, date of birth, SSN last four, the last branch you served in, and an email contact.

To use the website, your records must have been digitized by the DoD. If that hasn't happened, you can use the phone number in the previous post to get information on what you need to do.

I did the VetVerify thing the day Dave posted the above messge. Today, I got an invite for early access to the system. I'm browsing the myNavyExchange.com right now. Nice site. Anything you guys want price-checked?

Do they have a free shipping option similar to the Amazon Prime program?

Hi Stan,

It does not appear that they have a program like Prime. On their main page is a banner which proclaims Free Shipping when:
- You use your Military Star credit card (this is a thing?)
- Your order totals $49.95 or more
- You choose Ship to Store (and pick up at your local brick-and-mortar affiliated Exchange)

It is my understanding that "Veterans" cannot shop at physical stores (or get on base), but "Retirees" presumably can.

How does it work?

  • Place your order on www.myNavyExchange.com as you normally would.
  • During checkout (Shipping), select Ship to Store as your shipping option and select a store you would like to pick it up at.
  • When you come to your NEX Customer Service center to pick up your order, present your DOD ID and your order confirmation email to the NEX associate.
  • If you have listed a designated person to pick up your order, they must bring a DOD ID and the order confirmation email.

What if I’m not available to pick up my order?

  • That's OK! You can designate someone else to pick up your order during the checkout process.
  • The designated person must bring 1) a DOD ID and 2) the order confirmation email with them to pick up the order.
  • An alternate pick up person must be identified during the checkout process. Failure to do so will require the person placing the order to pick up the order.

What else should I know?

  • This service is only available for select products - if you do not see Ship-To-Store as an option during checkout, you have items in your cart that are not eligible.
  • Ineligible items include (but are not limited to) HAZMAT items such as perfume and nail polish.
  • Please reference your tracking information in the email you receive when your order has shipped. Once it has been delivered, your order is eligible for pickup from the designated location.

Surcharges

I have access to their Web Site.  It is rare, if ever, that their prices are competitive with amazon.com, jet.com, etc.

That said, The NEX and PX Exchanges also rarely have competitive prices in spite of being State Tax Exempt.

I'm glad that they are making this benefit available, but don't build big expectations.

The Commissary, on the other hand is a HUGE financial benefit that I really did not appreciate until I took over the Grocery Shopping Chores about 20 years ago.

EDIT:  I just reviewed my post and feel I should mention that all eligible users of the NEX/PX Systems may not agree with my assessment.  I must say that they are packed with shoppers every day.  I don't see the value, but obviously some do.
