Let us not forget this date 54 years ago.

I was on Subbase when we got the word.  The Base church bells rang all day.

Where were you?

I was on the USS Scamp SSN-588 in San Diego getting ready to head for Westpac five days later.  We got underway with no answers as to her fate or location.  We had previously been through the "destructive" testing range (slow motion cameras etc.) showing all the pipes bouncing around with the shock waves - there but for the grace of God we went.... Our A School classmate, Edgar Bobbit was not so lucky...

Wasn't the Scamp a sister ship to the Scorpion?  It came to Pearl right after the Scorpion tragedy, I believe on the way to Westpac in '68.

Nuclear Power School in Windsor Locks CT with orders to Sub School.  Was a sad time and a time for reflecting on my career choice. I stuck with the plan and did 7 patrols on USS Ethan Allen.

I thought Scorpion's sister ship was the Shark...I only say that because the Shark usta pull into pier 22 along with Scorpion...( SubRon6 )

The Sculpin was the sister ship to the Scamp, both stationed in San Diego.

I was on the Sculpin in the Mare Island Shipyard getting our fuel oil and compensating water line that ran through the Reactor Compartment replaced.  It seems that we discovered what Chloride Stress Corrosion does to stainless steel piping.  I have made a number of posts over the years about what I believe happened to the Thresher and won't go through all that now.

We were in Pearl, heading to Westpac when the piping problem was discovered and were sent directly to Mare Island for repairs.  The Scamp "graciously" took our Westpac trip (Thanks John)

The Skipjack, Scamp, Scorpion, Sculpin, Shark, and Snook were all Skipjack class/Variant Scamp except the Skipjack which was Variant Skipjack.
As a side note the George Washington was made from original hull of the Scorpion.

Aboard USS Barbel SS-580 at Pearl Harbor.  A somber day then, as it is now.

I also remember we (Blue/599) received a sonarman (David Spence) who came off the 593 a month before she was lost.  He was a mess for a while but recovered and went on the next patrol with us.  He is still around in Pennsylvania.

John Clear, Dan Martini, and I were all in the same EM 'A' Class in San Diego prior to Sub-School.  I think Dan and John was in Duane Bobbit's Sub School class.  I had pneumonia and was set back.  Duane Bobbit from Midland, TX was a neat guy was in the EM 'A' Class with us and was lost on the 593.

Similar story with USS Sea Robin receiving a RM1(SS) transfer from Thresher in Jan of 1963.  We had been in PNSY recently and Richard BARTSCH heard we were going to the MED.  He was quite the liberty hound.

When he died in the mid 80s his ashes were brought out to the THRESHER site for burial.

Skipjack-class submarines

USS Skipjack (SSN-585)
USS Scamp (SSN-588)
USS Scorpion (SSN-589)
USS Sculpin (SSN-590)
USS Shark (SSN-591)
USS Snook (SSN-592)

The Shark was out of Norfolk (D & S piers) in 1968.
