CDR Robert Todd Meloy, USN(Ret), passed away on June 1st, 2018 at his home in Ashburn, VA. He was eighty-five years old. A true Washingtonian, Todd was born in Washington, DC in 1932 to Catherine and Alex Meloy of Lanham, MD. He grew up in Alameda, CA, graduating from Alameda High School in 1950, then attending the University of California, Berkeley, for one year before entering the Naval Academy, Class of 1955, 14th Company, via a SECNAV appointment.

At the USNA, he was involved in English, History and Government clubs and activities, as well as the TRIDENT magazine. Upon commissioning, he served 18 months on the USS Yorktown before entering Submarine School in 1956. His 18-year career in submarines included tours as Engineer Officer on the USS Volador, followed by Nuclear Power School, Reactor Control Officer on the USS Patrick Henry, new construction Commissioning Engineer on the USS Tecumseh, Executive Officer on the USS U.S. Grant, ASW Officer on CINCPACFLT Staff, Commanding Officer on the USS Will Rogers, and Program Manager at Strategic Systems Project Office, Washington DC.

He retired in September 1975, after 20 great years of active duty, and the probable distinction of having made the most SSBN strategic deterrent patrols (19) of anyone on active duty at that time. After retirement, Todd, ably assisted by his wife, entered the retail and small business world. He initially purchased and operated a specialty home furnishings store in the Tyson Corner Mall, then expanded that business into a nationally recognized Awards and Recognition company (Crystalake Engravers).  Over the next 35 years, Crystalake Engravers became a primary awards supplier to several government agencies and local service organizations.

Todd was a charter member of the Tysons Corner Rotary Club, and held various positions in Rotary over more than 40 years. He was a consummate volunteer, and derived great pleasure from helping people and causes. After selling Crystalake Engravers in 2012, Todd and his wife moved to Ashby Ponds, a retirement community near Leesburg, VA. Never content to “just sit,” he was active in community life, including service on numerous community committees. He also served as Chairman and Chief Organizer of the campus  “Conservative Caucus,”  a group of rational thinking, active residents.

He is survived by his delightful wife of 59 years, Luz Gaytan Meloy of San Diego, sons Ted and Wil Meloy, daughter Elizabeth Nestor, brother Alex, and 3 grandchildren.  A funeral service will be held at The Church of the Holy Comforter in Vienna, Va. on Friday, June 15 at 11:00 am. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to The Naval Submarine League, Annandale, VA.
