Way to welcome a new DOW or COW. Only the selected few were treated to this honor. I can remember the entire off watch section assembling in the shaft alley and the on watch COW adjusting the trim for it just prior to his relief. Then when the relief happened, exactly ten minutes later, at two minute intervals, everyone proceeded to the torpedo room, including the off going watch. The meal was delayed to accommodate the maneuver.

Had I done everything right throughout my life, the World wouldn't have noticed.

Our trim parties were reserved for the officers we didn't care for.  We had two junior officers that could be real assholes when talking to us grunts.  They were selected, but on our boat officers the crew respected were not subject to this.

One such officer was always belittling us on the watch over qual questions. He'd ask a question and if he didn't agree with the answer he'd belittle the person he asked - most times the answer was correct.

Our skipper gave this officer the opportunity to take the Pickerel out of Pearl Harbor for the first time.  The Harbor was dead calm, but this officer started vomiting down our sail before we even  reached the open sea.

I was standing topside in formation as a line handler looking up at where the sound came from, and Chief Thompson, standing in formation to my right said in his own style, "whore's ass, we'll have to dive just to clean the puke off the sail."  A few of us couldn't contain ourselves and broke into laughter.

A 580, snorkeling std on two, would try to run with a large up angle due to drag on the sail.  Gradually the DOOW would pump so he could level the bubble and make for a much easier time for him and the planesmen.  We would be very heavy fwd - time for a loss of shaft lube oil drill and the panic that followed.

One time at Pearl all family was allowed on board for Family Day.  The boat was going about 20 knots on the surface with most of the guests mostly in the FTR.  We went into a crash drive drill and a dead slow speed instantly as the dive officer got relieved

The relieving officer was not fully aware of the impact these factors would have on our trim.  The boat spent the next hour overcoming huge down angles, pumping tanks, and people moving thru the boat.  They thought it was for their benefit, but it wasn't.  The boat at one time got to 370 feet during all this.  When you've gone from top speed on the surface to dead slow underwater and you've got forty people forward of control room the boat moves forward at a severe down angle.  I don't think the new dive officer took these factors into his initial assessment.

Bottom line the guests enjoyed it like a roller coaster - the crew Not.
