With the new Navy, and concern for families and crew moral, I wouldn't be surprised to see all vessels with two crews within the next ten years. That is if they could attract the number of personnel to support this.

There are actually somethat have three crews for two ships. That is so they can keep the ships forward deployed.

These extra crews come at a very sizeable cost over the life of the ship/boat, including benefits and future benefits - particularly vessels that require largely highly skilled/trained crew members.

I heard the new LCS ships were originally planned to be staffed with the three crew two ship concept but they have recently changed that to the two crew one ship (blue/gold) concept.

SSBN's have always had two crews.
