Navy Sub Returns to Port after Leak Found in Nuclear Plant

The Associated Press 20 Sep 2018

GROTON, Conn. — The Navy says its attack submarine USS Pittsburgh had to return to its Connecticut base recently because of what was described as a "minor" moisture leak within its nuclear propulsion plant.

The Day reports that the leakage was discovered during a routine inspection while the ship was at sea. The source was near a valve in the propulsion plant. The issue did not affect the ability of the propulsion plant to function properly.

Cmdr. Sarah Self-Kyler, spokeswoman for the Navy's Atlantic submarine fleet, said the moisture was contained within the reactor compartment, and did not affect the safety of the reactor or pose a risk to the crew.

Sub base personnel and the crew are working on the problem, best addressed in port.

The Groton-based submarine was commissioned in 1985.

Same thing happened on Ustafish. Spent a few days in St. Croix trying to determine exact source so an intelligent decision could be made as to could we safety transit home for repairs.

Sped home to EB, fixed "issue" and then back to St. Croix.

Hey, somebody had to do it!

PS This was on an early 637 and it rurned out that a few subsequent boats came to have the same issue. They knew where to look based on our experience.

Was it a Babcock and Wilcox issue or an EB issue? Just curious. (If'n it aint classified, of course)

I was in my early years at B&W when the Pitts was being conceived.

Dan. I think your question was directed to the OP.

My ustafish problem was associated with Pressurizer Heaters. Sent us back to EB with restrictions for repairs. There were a few boats that ended up with the same problem and were called back for inspection and repair. I do not recall if it was an EB problem or a B&W issue.
