BY THE NUMBERS: Submarine stats from WWII

1178 Marus sunk (5,053,491 tons) by 263 subs on 31,571 patrol days with 16,000 men serving.

We also sank 214 Naval vessels of 577,626 tons.

We lost 52 US subs/3506 men. They lost 91 subs.

34 US subs won PUC Award and 38 won the NUC. 61 sub COs made Admiral later.

116 US Wolfpacks used, 97 Special Ops-Supply, rescue, minefield surveys, evacs, photo recon.

4112 Ships attacked with 14,728 torpedoes costing $10,000 each then.

Mk 14s were 3280#, 21.5’ x 21”, carrying 643 # Torpex, fueled by 180 proof alcohol at ranges of 4500/ 9000 yds. 

Japan had 5,421, 143 tons of available shipping in 1941, 1,547, 418 in Aug 45.

22,039,600 tons of Japanese imports in 1940, 2,743, 200 in 1945

25 Ships shared by 2 boats.  4 Ships sunk by subs/plane combination
