Through a generous donation by John Clear, we are in possession of every episode of The Silent Service, a television series from the 50s.
I have been converting them from DVD media to digital files, and am making them available here:

Season 1 (39 episodes)
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1gGYDAh2tMgXjnXVocU_n7P9xv2PE5SFE?usp=sharing" rel="nofollow - https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1gGYDAh2tMgXjnXVocU_n7P9xv2PE5SFE?usp=sharing

Season 2 (39 episodes)
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1f4tLV-XBViRVw-dFUXtD5XDB4hEiutHI?usp=sharing" rel="nofollow - https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1f4tLV-XBViRVw-dFUXtD5XDB4hEiutHI?usp=sharing

3/29/2020 - First 16 episodes of Season 1 uploaded for your binging pleasure.
4/12/2020 - All 39 episodes of Season 1 are uploaded. Some of the disks had minor scratches, so some of the file may have problems. If you encounter this, let me know and I will re-rip the episode at a lower speed (for error correction).
6/14/2020 Episodes 1 through 36 of season 2 are now online at the above link. It seems I am missing Episodes 37, 38, and 39. Will update here when I am bale to get them posted.

Reminds me that I need to convert the original John Clear VHS tapes. After all this Covid19 settles down.

I'm trying to figure how to convert the m4v files linked to to, say, DVD or another format so I can more easily display at home. (I do have DVDFab,)

All - You can easily download and view these episodes on your computer with Windows Media Player or the free tool VLC. There is also a Mac version of VLC.

@Tom - Should be simple enough with one of those VHS/DVD player/recorders.

@SaltiDawg - If you'd like I can provide ISO images of the DVDs once I am done ripping the episodes.

Turns out I can stream the m4v format Silent Service episodes to my Big Screen TV and watch. Watched the first Episode re the Jack - skippered by CDR Dykers, the host of the Series. Wife and I will watch an episode every three or four days. Looking forward to gerry being able to get to Season II - or is it the second half of Season I

gerry,
Please don't rush on my account. Why wife and I watch maybe 35-45 minutes of a movie every night - so it takes typically 3 or 4 nights to watch a movie.
Before viewing the next movie I have saved up, we view a "short" for one night or sometimes 2 nights. Say a Silen SErvice Episode, a Netflix Series Episode, or similar.

It'll take us over a month before we work thru the 16 Episodes you've posted so far.

No worries. I struggled with getting those episodes ripped properly for far too long. Thought software was my problem. In the meantime, my main server here at home died, so I built a brand new one, a BEAST with 32Gb RAM and 10TB of storage. On a whim, I tried ripping the DVDs with it.. and it worked flawlessly from the first try.

So, I've got the process debugged, can crank em out pretty fast now.

It takes me just a few seconds to download each episode. Takes maybe 2 minutes to transfer them via WiFi to my storage in Living Room for display on my Pioneer Plasma.
The video issues I saw in Episode one were not bad and I am positive were not introduced by your manipulations.
I have DVDFab and was going to convert your files to mp4 or something but as I said, no need.

My wife cringed at the dialog a few times during the Episode about Jack. Specifically not referring to the "Japanese" by that name, but rather as the pejorative shortened versions. I reminded her that when this originally aired that was almost assuredly our usage also.

Which reminds me. We watched the film Midway a couple of weeks ago. Not well done, IMHO, but I'm currently reading Midway by Walter Lord. In any event, at the end of the film they voiced over a Dedication of the Film to
both the American and Japanese Heroes involved. I found that offensive and will not watch that film again.

So, Episode II and Trout is going into Corregidor in 1942. Looking for a Bearing To Ft.Drum. They pass the word up to the Bridge that it should bear Bearing 505 degrees...

Most (all?) of these original SS episodes are on YouTube with the commercials removed.

Convenient if you can get it on your TV.

Are these better quality?

No, sadly the source media (DVDs) I ripped them from were recorded at 640x480. I could upscale them, but the visual quality wouldn't change.

gerry's are at the same res as you tubes - 640-480

Commercials are not included - just a "Insert Commercial Here" flashed on screen. Same as You Tube.

PS What is the name of the boat that is shown in the opening credits? Shown surfacing from deep. Also, I wonder what the circumstances were????

Saltidawg,

It was the Pickerel (SS-524), surfacing at a 48 degree up angle, from a depth of 150 feet, during tests off the coast of Oahu, Hawaii, 1 March 1952.   http://www.navsource.org/archives/08/08524.htm" rel="nofollow - http://www.navsource.org/archives/08/08524.htm

When the boat slid back down at an angle didn't the stern get pretty deep?

610 - I had also heard that she went down pretty deep after her surface, but if you watch the entire video at:  http://twitter.com/navalinstitute/status/1246502178631700480%20" rel="nofollow - https://twitter.com/navalinstitute/status/1246502178631700480  you will see that she stayed safely on the surface after that Emergency Blow.

Any plan for when more will be available?

I'll see if I can get at least half of the season ripped and uploaded tomorrow (Sunday). There were only 2 seasons, so I *should* just marathon it out and finish.

Gerry,

Those three episodes were missing from Ray Stone's collection (he initially copied all those files from a Naval contact).  John and I were never able to get a copy of those.  The names of the three that are missing are:

Production number 19-7    The Ugly Duckling
Production number 19-21  The S-44 Story
Production number 19-36   Royal Submarines

Thanks for all your efforts to preserve our Naval Submarine History Gerry.  BZ

Thanks Dan!
Given the episode numbers you mentioned, I may have misnumbered the ones I uploaded. For anyone interested, all the availabl eepisodes are uploaded, but seaon 2 episode titles and numbers may not be accurate until I go back through them and fix.

Thanks!

Saltidawg - Yes they are missing and Gerry is aware of and is working on correcting the problem.  I take responsibility for this issue, since I recently sent Gerry some information that he should have had when he first started converting the Season Two series.  Basically, the titles don't matchup with the actual videos.  Gerry is on this problem like white on rice.  Smile

Hi Gents,

Don't know about white on rice. Intended to get the numbering/titling fixed last night but it didnt happen. Went to my CPA to finish my taxes and got an unpleasant surprise. Didnt end up getting home until much later than planned. Will try again tonight, barring that on the weekend. Not such a big deal except that when I rip the video from DVD it embeds the filename in the video... so even if I rename the files, the internal naming is still wrong. Looks like I will have to re-do the whole season, which isn't difficult but is time consuming.
I'll update you when I know more. Appreciate all the support this has gotten!

There appears to be a problem with Season 2, Episode 9 (the S-38 episode) as reported by Salitdawg (thanks!). I'll try to re-rip it this weekend and see if it is my fault or a problem with the source video.

Just wanted to report that my wife and I finished all of the episodes gerry posted.

We thoroughly enjoyed them and had some fun trying to recognize some of the actors were that went on to bigger and better shows. (It was hard in the final Episode to find Werner Klemperer (Col Klink in Hogan's Heroes believable as Gunter Prien in Scapa Flow!))

Thanks, gerry!

PS Now working on finishing Season 1 of the Das Boot continuation!

EDIT: We completed both season 1 and also Season 2 of Das Boot the sequel TV Series. Looking forward to Season 3 in 2021.
