On a particularly rough Winter Patrol in the North Atlantic I was passing thru Control when the OOD asked if I would like to take a look. We were making a pass and the scope was going up. I said sure. All I saw was rough water, but half way thru patrol the sight of the sky was great. That was my periscope liberty for all twelve runs I made.

One Christmas Eve we had periscope liberty to observe some city all lit up. It was likely a photo they somehow put into the scope because the town was a place we never went near in the North Atlantic.

As a planesman on Skipjack I spent a lot of time in Control. Got to see Iceland through the periscope once.

We can't all be heroes. Somebody has to stand on the curb and clap as they march by.

Geez, you nuc guys had no fun at all.

Us smokeboat guys would surface at night and if you wanted to go up to the bridge, you could...
Good liberty watching the phosphorous glowing alongside the boat, smoking a cigarette, joking with the OD and lookouts and of course talking about sex.

Who the heck ever said a patrol on a nuke was fun? SSN or SSBN, fun the patrols weren't. So I guess you are right.

Joe, I think you are not seeing the big Nuke picture. Those of us who patrolled the North Atlantic wasn't conducive to being on the surface not to mention the brutal cold winds and temperatures along with those 50ft+ waves. I know we missed out on some things you DBF guys enjoyed but it's all in the choices at the time. Be well my friend and stay out of Sussex county stuff as much as possible.

I dreamed of getting to Hawaii.  On the Catfish SS339 in 1961 I got to see the island of Hawaii through the scope and that was it.  We turned and went back to San Diego.  13 patrols on the Patrick Henry and never touched the scope!

That's because your Visa to travel forward of the Tunnel had expired. Only allowed to eat and sleep forward but no liberty.
