Groton Navy base becomes home port for two additional submarines

Sean Elliott, The Day, September 1

GROTON— The Naval Submarine Base here became the home port of two additional submarines Tuesday.

The U.S. Navy Virginia-class attack submarine USS Texas (SSN-775) was escorted up the Thames River to the base Tuesday by patrol boats from the Navy's Coastal Riverine Squadron 8 and the Thames Towboat Co. tug Paul A. Wronowski.

The Texas was commissioned in 2006 as the second boat in the Virginia class. Originally homeported in Groton, it has been based in Honolulu, Hawaii, since 2009.

The previous day, the Los Angeles-class submarine USS Newport News (SSN 750) arrived in Groton, as its home port shifted here from Norfolk, Va. That delighted SUBRON 12 commodore, Capt. Matt Boland, who had a tour on the submarine as a junior officer, the Public Affairs Office of the Naval Submarine Support Center in New London said Tuesday in a news release announcing the home port changes.

The Newport News, which was commissioned in 1989, will be undergoing maintenance at the base, the release said.
