Friends, I'm a co-author of "Blind Man's Bluff," the book on submarines during the Cold War, and I just helped ocean explorer Robert Ballard write "Into the Deep: A Memoir From the Man Who Found Titanic." It comes out Tuesday, 5/11/21, and has lots of fascinating new information about how the Navy helped fund his search for Titanic and some of the other intelligence work he did for Ron Thunman, Dwaine Griffith & Jonathan Greenert. It's available through all bookstores & online book sites, and the National Geographic Channel will air a companion documentary on June 14 -- Christopher Drew

Thanks, Gerry! I remember Ron and this board fondly from back when Blind Man's Bluff came out.

Chris:
I have read you and Sherry's book several times and still have it in 1st Edition hardback in "as new" condition.  I remember a story of Sherry with her child coming to a function in Groton but cannot even nail down the year.
I always wanted to ask if you had any clearance problems with the Navy before the book was released?
  Thanks for coming aboard.
Ron

Hi, Ron, good to touch base again. Sherry will be glad for your memory and hello. As we worked on the book in the late 1990s, the Russian Navy had fallen apart enough that I think some officials felt it was time to let people, including the submariners' wives and children, know more about what they had done to help win the Cold War. The submarine pushed also was getting slashed in D.C. then, so it also helped in Congress for the force to have more of the kind of "Top Gun"--or "Bottom Gun"--aura that it deserved. I came across some of Bob Ballard's work for the Navy back then, and it was lots of fun to talk to him extensively and tell his story now. All best, Chris

Ron as an aside to your post. John Wynn picked up Sherry and her child from her apartment in NYC. Her and a few others signed copies of Blind Man's Bluff to whomever bought their copy of the book to the USSVI function.
I also forgot the year. But I do remember that Whitey Mack was present also and he signed my copy too.
That was a great anniversary that year.
