There comes a time for rethinking how to keep in touch with folks on the internet.  That time, for me is now.

Submarinesailor.com has a wrong email address for me,  I cannot log on to change it.  I  cannot communicate with anyone there.  The site then, is useless for me.

USSVI has changed user names and made it necessary to change passwords.  I did this as directed.  It worked the first time I logged on immediately after changing as directed.  Now I cannot log on.  I cannot change my password. Without logging on I cannot communicate with anyone there.  It is unfortunate because I live in Tucson, the site of the National Convention.  Without being able to log on to the site, I cannot find out the events, the schedule and so on.  Thus USSVI has become useless to me.

Ron is likely to stop this bulletin board.  I agree that maybe it is time to do so.  He and other who supported this site have performed amazingly over the years and I thank them from the bottom of my heart.  I'll be logging off from here for the last time.

To all of you who read this board and 'bottom gun', thank you for your friendship it has been wonderful knowing all you.

This is not a whining complaint, I'm too old for that.  Just needed to say stuff.

Very Respectfully
Jim Christley

Jim:

The Convention Website is:  https://www.ussvi.org/2023-ch

The "old" Web site for USSVI is:  https://ussubvets.org/home.asp

My Web site is a victim of progress, i.e. Facebook, et al.  I remember when I created the 4th Web site on the net for submarines.  Don Merrigan had a good one and did some charity work with it.  A LtCmdr did one but was told to remove it by the Navy. There was another done by an instructor at Sub School but he was told to remove it also.  A little after mine a guy put one up on the Sturgeon Class and it touched on  some sensitive areas and was ask to remove it.
I remember once I found a picture of a boomer diving station.  I was asked by Navy to remove it.  I said no because it came from a Navy Web-site.  Nothing more heard.
I did3 auctions on-line to benefit museum boats: Cavalla, Torsk, Croaker and estimate we raised about $6k for those boats. During one of those auctions I was sent a piece of hatch seal from the Dolphin that we almost lost.  I got a phone call from Navy on that and said it was classified and to return it or did they want a "suit" to come and pick it up.  I sent it to D.C.
Remember the Run to Perth?
All fun and games.

I came aboard during the Run to Perth. I had previously seen an article on the Internet about life in a submarine authored by Ron Martini, a shipmate from the 599B,  I just had to open it, there I found the BBS. Not all fun and games, remember Chappie? We got over those kinds of things, but you're correct being Facebook victim. Thanks for those years.

Imagine a couple of subvets, each running a small comfortable digital space mainly serving aging sometimes crotchety but handsome, very handsome subvets from all around the world. Two little to no cost gathering places for those who wish to attend, reading just to smile or posting just to gripe, or just visit and be somewhat together, for a while.
Imagine those spaces gone....

I also remember  "The Conning Tower" hosted by Jim Steinmetz, a chat-room on, I believe, AOL. That's where I, a Minesweep sailor, and skimmer, was welcomed into the submarine community. Thanks, Jim for the warm welcome, and Thanks, Ron, for hosting this BBS.

Seems funny to me that no one has yet mentioned Ray Stone's After Battery web page.  I copied all of Dex and other story writers from there and Gerry has posted them at the above link.  A lot of memories.

You can still go back and review websites that have long been shut down by going to the Wayback Machine website if you are interested in doing that.

It seems to me that very few of "my generation" of sub sailors (or those since then) care much about the history and rich culture of the brotherhood. I served on two boats over 8 years, and I can count the number of old  shipmates in USSVI on one hand. You guys, the generations before mine, were the true backbone of the sub force. Not to say today's submariners are lesser... just different. I have scars on my chest where my dolphins were tacked on. On my second boat, that was a FORBIDDEN act and would get a guy sh*tcanned to the surface fleet (if they were lucky).

It is different now, has been for a while. I'm proud to have been raised by your generation of submarine sailors. I did my best to pass that culture on to my sea-pups. Today's bubbleheads are great technicians in the corporate Navy. Not the same Navy we served in.
