CDR Rufus E. Rose, Jr., USNR (Ret.), of Pensacola, FL, passed away on July 1, 2021. He was born on September 3, 1932, in Long Beach, CA to VADM Rufus E. Rose, Sr. and Mary Rose.

He lived the life of a Navy Junior and was commissioned from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1954. He qualified in submarines and served in the Atlantic Fleet and Mediterranean during Cold War operations. In 1987, Rufus earned his doctorate from Florida State University and retired from combined Naval and federal service.

He was a volunteer with the National Park Service, involved with Earth Watch, a qualified Spanish interpreter, a life member of the International Youth Hostel Federation, and an avid birder.

He is predeceased by his wife of 25 years, Merilu Rose. He is survived by his daughter Debbie (Jack) Williams, son Ed (Pam) Rose, and daughter Jennifer (Eddie) Dodrill, and stepdaughter Robin (Pete) Patera, and 10 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday June 9, 2021, at 3 p.m. at Bayview Fisher Pou, 3351 Scenic Hwy, Pensacola, FL 32503. Military honors will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Covenant Care Hospice Pensacola or Heifer International.

The family would also like to thank Brown's Senior Care for their exceptional loving and compassionate care of Rufus.
