My goodness, spy ships. Next they will call them something like AGI's and fake fishing vessels. What is this world coming to when countries would actually monitor the activity of each other?
Walt,

I heard a sea story about some submarines being sent in and out of port with a different hull number on each side of the sail to screw up the other side's tally.  Since it was a sea story it was doubtless true.

I had always been amused with the FBMs in Holy Loch with no names and hull #s. So here we are, the scourge of Dunoon and surrounding areas with our ships name on our rockers. Wouldn't take a genius to figure which boat was which when a boat is seen leaving and no more Patrick Henry sailors on the beach, for example.

And there was someone watching.  I recall when scuttlebutt was making the rounds about a sailor from one of the FBM boats who tried to sell a Mickey Mouse book to a "Russian" in one of the other bars and was arrested by one of the Navy Intel. agencies (I think).  This was when I was on the Wilson so it would have been around 1967 or so.  However, since it was scuttlebutt it was doubtless true, as well.

BTW, Bob your avatar, which I assume is a photo of yourself, is like looking in the mirror a couple of years ago.  But, now that I have a cordless trimmer, that was a gift from my frau, I am much less hirsute.  Not questioning her motives, but . . . Wink

The pic is from about 3 years ago.  Ziggy the Cat walked across my keyboard and the computer took it.  Since then my wife has gone after me with a weed whacker, so a little less beard.

That was around 1967 in Holy Loch. I too don't know how true it was but there was a lot of meetings in crews mess about dealing with the locals after the incident. Supposedly the sailor was offered $5 for each of the books.

I can't recall any dollar figure associated with the incident but I remember it transpiring in one of those little bars up the street and around the corner from the Argyle and the Crown.  But, that was 50 years ago, so . . . you know, age has decrepitated the old gray cells just a tad.  BTW, if a sailor was selling the books for $5 each it sounds more like something a sailor from the tender would do rather than a submariner.  Maybe a bosun's mate . . . I'm just sayin' . . .Wink LOL

I am going to take my fingers to the woodshed. They keep arguing with my mind and, dammit, they're winning. The amount was $5000.00/book.

So you're saying that it probably wasn't a bosun's mate off the Simon Lake who dunnit.  Wink
