The original design for the Gato class had separate engine rooms for the first time and a deck hatch for each.  The first 6 or possibly 8 had the hatches installed.  In April of 1942 it was decided to eliminate the forward engine room deck hatch.  All the boats that had the hatch had them removed and blanked off.  None of the post April 1942 boats had the forward engine room hatch at all.
