A number of years ago at a USSVI Anniversary in Groton, a bunch of us were sitting around telling stories about growing up. Two of the guys were natives from Georgia and telling stories about growing up and the snakes they feared. The only one they were really scared of was the Cottonmouth. It seemed they were mean enough to cross a road to attack you. As kids they were always aware of them, more so then any other brand of snake, which makes me quite happy to have been born and raised in NYC. Where the only animal I feared was a angry dog. Angry
So I agree with all of you that they may have had some ecological use, but are nasty and useless to me. I can't even watch a show on tv about them.
On the good side of the conversation about snakes, I recently read where they are hunting and killing Boas that have been released to the wild in Florida. They have killed so far about 1000 of them.  ClapClap  I wish I could find the article and paste it here for your appreciation!
