On a numerical scale seventy is not a very large number; in fact it is quite small. However, when it is applied to the time you have spent on this earth, it is pretty damn big. What I want to know is how did this number seventy, ever apply to me. Heck just yesterday I was only twenty two and a newly minted civilian after having spent four years ( a lifetime ) in the Navy. I must have been sleep walking for most of my life, because this number could not have possibly snuck up on me, at least without me having some knowledge of it.

There is a vague memory of previous birthdays. But they didn’t amount to too much though as they happened. What I do remember is waking up to the number seventy the day it clung to me for the first time and the realization that I better not plan too far into the future.

It’s amazing how each new decade changes your outlook on things. Forty was not that big a deal, nor was fifty. For some reason I remember fifty five. I thought it was a cool number to be, if I had to be a number.  Then sixty happened. Wow sixty. Everything I read told me that sixty was the new forty or was it fifty. Oh well, it got me closer to retirement which was after all what I had been working for all these long years. Then I retired at sixty four. Did that feel wonderful. I felt reborn, it was the new me. We retired out of state, to a new home near the beach and the only thing I needed to worry about were the tides in the river as I kayaked my way merrily along.

Then strange things started to happen. Body parts began to wear out. My feet started complaining after walking a 1/2 mile.  I had to have cataracts removed. A hernia tear needed to be repaired. A stroke hit me nine days before my sixty- eighth birthday. What was going on? Was this the beginning of the end? I hoped not. I still had a lot of things I wanted to do, especially with my two new grand- daughters.

The Buddhists have a contemplation that says in part, “Aging is unavoidable, illness is unavoidable, and death is unavoidable”. ..  They’re right it’s just life.

As I approach seventy-eight, I’m still wondering about that number seventy. Confused

Turning 75 last Saturday kind of got to me. Not much in the way of aches and pains just a reminder of mortality. So, if I've wanted to do it, and haven't yet, time to get the thumb out of my butt and start doing it.
