Ike gave the go ahead, and they headed towards the beaches. Many never even made it to dry land. More died or were wounded on the beach. Even more pushed off the beach and started the beginning of the end of Nazi Germany. God Bless Them All.
Walt,
Had I done everything right throughout my life, the World wouldn't have noticed.

God Bless Them All...Amen to that!

I had the good fortune to spend a week in Normandy some years ago. Stood at the waterline on Omaha and Utah beach, looked inland, and wondered how anybody survived those landings across that very long stretch of sand.  Add to that the climb up the cliff at Pont du Hoc, while under fire. A visit to the American Cemetery above Omaha showed the cost - over 11000 graves of men from the invasion and other actions throughout Europe.

Sadly, I see not a mention in today's Washington Post.
