CAPT Elmer Hill Kiehl, USN (Retired), 91, passed away on June 30, 2016. Mr. Kiehl was born in Annapolis, MD and was the son of the late Elmer and Nelle Kiehl. He was a proud graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Class of 1947. He served in the US Navy for 33 years and retired as a Captain in 1976.

Captain Kiehl served and commanded on many ships and submarines, including USS NEW JERSEY (BB-62), LSM (397), USS SEAFOX (SS-402), USS TILEFISH (SS-307), USS CARP (SS-338). He Commanded the USS BERGALL (SS-320), USS BONEFISH (SS-582), COMSUBRON 14, COMSUBDIV 22, USS PLYMOUTH ROCK (LSD-29), and COMPHIBRON 4. He served in the USN Bureau of Ordnance, commanded the Naval Amphibious School, Little Creek VA, and attended the US Army General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth KS. He was awarded the following medals: Legion of Merit, Army Commendation, Meritorious Service (two awards), WWII Victory, Korean Service, Expert Rifleman, and National Defense Service Ribbon (with one star). 

Survivors include his loving wife of 69 years, Aroostine "Dar" Riddle Kiehl, four sons, Frederick W. Kiehl (Emilija) of London, England, Thomas H. Kiehl of Norfolk, VA, Timothy R. Kiehl (Anne) of Bethesda, MD, and Grant L. Kiehl (Cindy) of San Diego, CA. He was preceded in death by a beloved son, Alexander G. Kiehl. Also surviving him is a brother, William A. Kiehl (Carol) of Alexandria, VA, seven grandchildren, Marian Kiehl-Kearney (Chris) of Virginia Beach, Allison R. Kiehl (Sarah) of Asheville, NC, Alexander L. Kiehl (Wenny) of London, Nicholas H. Kiehl (Lucy) of Los Angeles, CA, Robbie L. Kiehl, Nick E. Kiehl, and Meredith A. Kiehl all of San Diego, CA, four great grandchildren, Allie M. Faison, Kaitlin A. Kearney, Kyleigh A. Kearney, and Colin C. Kearney, as well as dear nieces, cousins, extended family and good friends. He was a feisty Dude!

A funeral service will be held at Galilee Episcopal Church on Thursday July 7, 2016 at 2:00 p.m., with reception to follow in the church social hall. Interment will be private, preceding the funeral service. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Rd Chapel is handling arrangements. The casket will be open for viewing on Wednesday July 6, 2016 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at H.D. Oliver.

CAPT Kiehl served aboard USS Sea Robin as LTjg (1959-1960).  His brother William also served on Sea Robin as LTjg (1952-1955)
