On Saturday 5 May Sub Vets, and wives, of USSVI Bremerton Base and Blueback Base toured the USS BREMERTON (SSN-698). The BREMERTON, the oldest commissioned submarine in the United States Navy recently returned to Bremerton to begin the de-commissioning process. Sadly, this proud submarine will shortly enter the recycling program at Bremerton's PSNS (Puget Sound Naval Shipyard). The 37-year-old Los Angeles-class nuclear-powered fast-attack submarine is the 11th submarine of its class. The sub's keel was laid on 8 May 1976 in Groton, Connecticut. She was commissioned on 28 March 1981. The distinction of oldest Submarine will soon pass to another Washington City. The USS OLYMPIA (SSN-717). The sub's keel was laid in 31 March 1981 in New Port News, Virginia. She was commissioned on 17 November 1984. Along with becoming the oldest sub in the US Navy, OLYMPIA will soon receive Admiral O’Kane’s good luck charm: his personal cribbage board is kept in the wardroom of the Navy’s oldest commissioned submarine. I want to thank the crew of the BREMERTON for their hospitality during our tour and especially Steve Corcoran of USSVI Bremerton Base and Jay Perry of USSVI Blueback Base for making our tour possible.
