Capt. Walter Dean Chadwick, 96 of Hooversville, died May 6, 2017 at home. Born Dec. 13, 1920 in Johnstown, son of Harold J. Chadwick and Lillian (Shugars) Chadwick Livingston. Preceded in death by parents, brother Harold Chadwick, and wife Gertrude (Trudy) of 67 years. Survived by children: Susan Cocke, W. David Chadwick, and Frances Eckman. Also survived by sister-in-law Frances Hesselbein, six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. 

Graduate of Johnstown High School in 1938, Valley Forge Military Academy, and U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md. Served on the USS Gabilan for six submarine war patrols during WWII and several other submarines. Commanded USS Bluegill (SS242), USS Truckee (AO147), Commander Service Squadron 8, staff of Submarine Force Commander, and Atlantic Training Command before retiring in 1973 after 30years of active duty.

He operated a sheep farm near Stoystown during retirement, very active in Grace Lutheran Church, Stoystown as choir director and member of church council. Walter spent 67 years of glorious, blissful life with his perfect, loving wife Trudy. Member of Stoystown Lions Club, Stoyestown Area Historical Society, and Stoystown American Legion.

Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Deaner Funeral Home, Stoystown where a Lions service will be held at 8 p.m. Viewing from 9 a.m. until service at 10 a.m. Friday at Grace Lutheran Church, Stoystown. Rev. Katie Maul officiating. Interment Grandview Cemetery, Johnstown. Graveside military rites by Somerset Co. Honor Guard. Memorial contributions may be given to Stoyestown Historical Society, P.O. Box 11, Stoystown, PA 15563, or North Star Youth Outreach, 320 Allegheny St., Boswell, PA 15531.
