History types are familiar with the grid markings the Germans used in WWII in the Atlantic.  The markings were squares starting in the North Atlantic with AA in the NW an continuing east and south.  England was is the AM and AN grid which in turn were each divided into numbered squares numbered 11 to 99.  Florida, for example was in the DB and DC squares and Italy was CJ. This made it easy for Donitz to tell his subs where to go.  AM11 (for example)  was a lot easier than a lot of Longitude and Latidude numbers.
But few knew the US had a system of naming areas of the Pacific as well.  Although not as organized but useable.  The areas (none square) were named, Stable, Basement, Kennel, Garage, Pantry, Closet, Gullet, Windpipe, Cupboard, Cistern, Treadmill, Destroy, Legjoint, Gardenspot, Detect, Furnace (off Tokyo), Defer,  and a few with just numbers. 2, 3, 9, 11, 12. These areas were not subdivided.
Also there were corridors that were named which were the lanes to be used for safe passage to prevent bombing. Reachrod was West to East terminating in Guam, Smokestack was NW to SE also ending in Guam.  The lane to Hawaii was named Shortcut and a north Pacific lane was called Corridor and Entrance.
I came across this map way back.  Marked Secret originally but declassified in 2001.  I will try to get a copy put in American Submariner and then here later.
