How many of us wore the DD Hat as a "legal" part of our uniform?
In what Naval District and when? Bonus points - what were the final two Districts that authorized the wearing of the DD Hat? Edited by SaltiDawg - 03 Oct 2022 at 4:21pm |

Because I had no idea what a "Donald Duck" hat is, I found this image.
Cool gear. We just had Dixie Cups and ballcaps in my day (84-92).

I was issued my Flat Hat in Boot Camp, 3/63. I was told it was only authorized in the 1st Naval District which is Boston. Shortly thereafter it was completely removed from service.

I was issued mine in July, 1960, while in Boot Camp in Great Lakes.
At that time the Donald Duck hat was "legal" in the First and Third Naval Districts only. That would be Boston and New York City headquarters. From what Tom Posted above, seems NYC stopped authorizing the hat followed by Boston. What we were told was that the reason for only those two Districts was that the concentration of sailors were found in "Big Cities" and it was not unsafe to wear the entirely (dark) blue uniform at night as the cities were well lighted. I don't know if that was true as to the reason! Edited by SaltiDawg - 04 Oct 2022 at 4:28pm |

Personally I would have preferred the flat hat as long as the uniform of the day was dress blues. Have no opinion about the undress blues. Dixie cup for whites (jumper and short sleeves). I also heard about the white hat standing out at night, but not specific to Boston or NYC, just in general.

Was told those hats were replaced by the dixie cups to stop drunk sailors on liberty worldwide from going full Donald and not wearing pants.

Don't know or remember the answer to when they allowed persons attached to ships to have their Ship Name on the DD Hat?
Anyone? |

The only ribbon on my Flat Hat said U.S. Navy.

I was in Boot Camp. I carried it to the 599 but that's when I found out it was not in the Uniform Regs then. I saw a photo of one of my Uncles in his Flat Hat during WWII. He was attached to a ship but the ribbon said US Navy. |
