During WWII the ship and boat enlisted crews were authorized to wear Boat Names on their DD hats... some Submarine Crew photos reflect this. I do not remember if in 1960-61 in NYC the ship name was authorized...

I was issued a flat hat in January of 1960 and never was stationed anywhere where I needed to wear it
   Based on the info here. I also heard that it was discontinued because sailors were getting hit by cars while hitchhiking…
