Gerald E. Green Capt.,
USN (Ret.) Passed away on February 13, 2021 at
his home in Annapolis, MD. He was surrounded by his family including his wife,
children, and grandchildren. Capt. Green was born in Hammondsport, NY in 1933.
He graduated from the US Naval Academy with distinction and a BS in Naval
Engineering in 1956. He married Mary E. (Betty) Eldredge in 1963 in Portsmouth,
NH. After USNA graduation, he
entered Naval Service as an officer and served 28 years before retirement.
During his distinguished career, he served on the USS Barry, USS Angler, USS
Tinosa, USS Seawolf, USS Queenfish, USS Lapon, and the USS Frank Cable. He also
served as Chief of Staff to COMSUBFLOT6, and Deputy Director of the Strategic
Systems Programs Office on the Staff of the Chief of Naval Operations, where he
oversaw the development of the Trident II Missile and construction of the
submarine base at King's Bay, Ga. During his career he received more
than 21 awards including the Legion of Merit. Following his highly
successful Naval career, he had a second career with the Department of Energy
where he served 12 years as a Senior Engineer in support of the management of
the National Laboratories and DOD programs. During his tenure at DOE, he was
awarded the National Nuclear Security Administration Gold Medal. He is survived by his wife of 57
years, Betty Green; his three children, and five grandchildren. He is preceded
in death by his parents, Larry Green and Freida Hayes Green and his brother
Donald Green of Hammondsport, NY. A viewing will be held at Hardesty Funeral
Home in Annapolis, MD from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, February 27, 2021. A burial
service at Arlington National Cemetery will be scheduled for a later
date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Memory of Gerald
Green, to the Naval Academy Foundation (www.usna.com/donate) attn. Alumni
Association and Foundation Center; or the Submarine League's capital campaign
(navalsubleague.org/support-us/donate-now). |

CAPT Green was Commissioning CO on Frank Cable - I was Commisioning Repair Officer. Served Squadron of SSN-637s in CHASN, SC.
